Protectors and Big Bads

By Dave Gerspach (dgjedi), WCA Co-Chair

Anyone know a good wicca with an Orb of Thesulah? Think I’m in need of a soul. Those thoughts ever cross your mind while crushing yet another opponent with you’re your Adam, Spike, Glory or Dark Willow deck? Or do you revel in the twisted mayhem caused by your characters? Do you lust after the power, glory and riches that should be yours? If you answered yes to any of the above, then you probably fall into the Big Bad category within the Buffy CCG universe.

And then there are those ready to stand up to the forces of evil. Watchers, slayers and scoobies in hand, they fight back these creatures of the night and protect the innocent. Does this describe your typical deck? While you may stray to the dark side on occasion, do you strive to protect the innocent and crush the forces of evil? If you answer yes to these questions, then you probably fall into the Protector category.

Most players have fought on both sides of the good and evil line, but over the past 15 months most players have had a tendency toward one side or the other. The rankings below present a list of players that have fought more for good followed by a list of players that have fought more for evil. Those that fight the good cause are known as Protectors. Seek them out if you want to learn how to fight evil. Here they are:

1.      John Bruno – 1091 / 512

2.      Caroline Boehmer – 1069 / 565

3.      Aly Greaves – 1062 / 382

4.      Jennifer Tse – 1057 / 477

5.      Matt Scarborough – 1051 / 406

6.      Justin Francis – 1048 / 429

7.      Dion Erbes – 1048 / 378

8.      Josh Smith – 1042 / 210

9.      Eric Hammond – 1039 / 368

10. Kit Radtke – 1039 / 209

11. Eduardo Gaeta – 1038 / 313

12. Don Tresca – 1037 / 233

13. Sean Jones – 1036 / 164

14. Danita Browne – 1035 / 170

15. Darryl Long – 1033 / 148

Have you ever sat across the table from a player and wondered if something was wrong? Maybe it was their fangs and lumpy forehead. Maybe it was the darkness in their eyes. Maybe they were just too pleasant and neat, or maybe they paid just a little too much attention to the latest in fashion shoes. Without realizing it, you may have been up against The Big Bad. Maybe you didn’t realize it, but you were The Big Bad. Wonder no more. These are the people you don’t want to seek out unless you’re looking for a job as a minion.

1.      David Gerspach – 1179 / 1016

2.      Keith Kusnier – 1082 / 382

3.      Patrick Parker – 1069 / 486

4.      Lee Finholt – 1066 / 590

5.      Meldzan Isakovic – 1051 / 401

6.      Chris Reynolds – 1042 / 373

7.      Chris Nichols – 1042 / 348

8.      Neil Figuracion – 1036 / 286

9.      Matt Butterfield – 1036 / 270

10. David Truax – 1033 / 291

11. Eric Ayers – 1033 / 279

12. Dan Joelson – 1030 / 245

13. Matt Strehlow – 1030 / 141

14. David Robins – 1029 / 172

15. Nich Schmitz – 1027 / 137

16. Andy Iverson – 1025 / 141

17. Stephanie King – 1024 / 169

18. Jared Coffin – 1021 / 205

19. Mike Rodgers – 1020 / 77

20. Ryan Green – 1018 / 75

21. Jack Travers – 1017 / 134

22. Cynthia Winston – 1016 / 75

23. Craig Winston – 1016 / 71

24. Nathan Martin – 1016 / 61

25. Dan Outhier – 1015 / 132

Seriously, Protectors and Big Bads in the Buffy CCG community all have a lot of fun (and I suspect they’d all eagerly join the scoobie ranks if given the chance). But if you do find yourself in a tournament with any of the above, this has been their tendency in recent times. It’s interesting to note that a few of the current Big Bads have won numerous Protector titles in the past. You can decide for yourself how this came to be.

If you think this list was interesting or fun, let me know and we’ll do it, or similar type lists, again in the future. Your ideas and comments are always appreciated and can be posted in the forum or as a private message to me if you’re so inclined.

Gen Con 2005 Update #4

By Dave Gerspach (dgjedi), WCA Co-Chair

This month we’re going to cover the Tabula Rasa, Sealed Deck and Dream Card tournaments at Gen Con. Just a reminder that Event Pre-registration for Gen Con starts at noon PST on May 16th. We should have the May newsletter with the two remaining tournament rules posted by then so everyone can make decisions regarding which tournaments they’d like to enter. While none of last year’s tournaments sold out in advance, we did not have any tournaments limited to 16 participants. Four of this year’s tournaments have such a limit.

Buffy CCG Extended Type A – Tabula Rasa

You start with a typical constructed deck that can include all printed and virtual cards released by Score Entertainment and mix in some random rule and condition changes. Every round, a random oversized card will be assigned to each game. The card will be turned over by the two players prior to game set-up. It will contain a rule change or condition that will be in effect for the remainder of the game. Each round the cards will be shuffled and randomly reassigned to tables. For Gen Con, the following ten Tabula Rasa cards will be used.

Actions, the Weirding – Action cards are playable in the following steps:

On card Playable In
Conflict Movement
Movement Resource
Resource Conflict

Curfew – Characters without the Human trait cannot move during night turns, but may move twice during day turns.

Does Too – The phrase “Does not count as a move” is replaced by the phrase “Does count as a move.”

Elimidate – During the setup phase, Players may search their Resource Deck and place into play three characters of the opposite sex of their Main Character. During each End Step, if possible, a player must discard one her supporting characters of the opposite sex of her Main Character. Replace “opposite sex” with “same sex” for Willow, Tara or Kennedy.

Get Ready, Go – For the remainder of the game, complete the Resource Step prior to the Movement Step.

Is That Space Taken – When placing locations, you may place your location on any space not containing a location card. These are then considered your locations.

Locations, the Weirding – Location designations change as follows:

On Card New Designation
School
Subterranean
Subterranean Outdoor
Outdoor Indoor
Indoor
Town
Town
School

Lost in the Dark – During the Prologue Step of a night turn, instead of placing your Challenge, each player must place their opponent’s Challenge if it can legally be put into play.

Rules of Engagement – Action cards that change the resolving talent of a fight change it to the talent represented by the lower right talent icon on the card instead.

Salary Cap – No player may have more than seven cards in his hand at one time.

There they are. It’s possible we may make a couple of changes over the next month as we continue to playtest these cards. In particular, we want to make sure the “Weirding” cards aren’t too confusing. We think they’ll be fun, but don’t intend to slow down game play. These cards will be considered final once the May Newsletter is published, or by the time Gen Con preregistration starts on May 16th (another plug).

The images for these Tabula Rasa cards will be generally available by mid-May. Besides the current groups playtesting these cards, the Gen Con versions will debut at a special to be announced tournament in May. And for those that make Gen Con, two of the prizes added to this tournament will be a complete set of these cards. Each print contains two copies of the card (one facing each player), each 3 ½” x 5” in size. They’re printed on photo paper and laminated. The design was done by Metrodj, so you know they’re beautiful.

Classic Buffy CCG Sealed Deck

On a first come, first serve basis players will get to select whether they want to play with a Hero Deck or Villain Deck. Once you make that selection, you’ll get a bag which will contain the following for specific to your alignment.

1 – Pergamum Prophecy Starter
1 – Class of 99 Starter
1 – “The Wish” Theme Deck
2 – Pergamum Prophecy Booster Packs
2 – Angel’s Curse Booster Packs
2 – Class of 99 Booster Packs
2 – Promo cards
4 – Set of plastic AC Essences

You will get approximately 30 minutes to build your deck. Play will start promptly on time. We will be trying to move through the rounds on a timely manner in order to complete four rounds within the four hour scheduled timeframe. Since registered players get all of the above cards for the entry fee of a mere $3.00, I expect this tournament to possibly sell out early. We are limited to 16 participants. So again, I encourage you to preregister.

Buffy CCG Extended Type B “Dream Card” Tournament

This tournament has long been anticipated by some fans of the game. For the first time ever at Gen Con, fan created cards as listed below will be legal for play. You are not required to use these cards in your deck (they are optional). However, many players have long been hoping to expand their decks to include characters, challenges, locations and other cards from later seasons of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. The following cards, all available at Buffyccg.com for download, will be playable in this tournament. If your deck contains any virtual cards, your entire deck must be sleeved and the virtual cards backed by printed Buffyccg cards.

Gen Con “legal” cards can be found in the Dream Card section of the buffyccg.com website and consist of all cards in following categories.

Once More With Feeling set
Weeks 1 through 12
Special Recognition cards
Halloween ’04 Fear Itself
Weeks 22 through 31

Note: These cards represent fan-based art created on the premise – “What if Score Entertainment had produced expansion sets for all seasons of the show?” While these cards have been reviewed and playtested by many experienced players, they are in no way to be construed as “legal” cards in the sense that all reproductions must be for personal use and enjoyment. Any player caught using these reproductions for any commercial reason will be restricted from participating in this tournament and possibly all future sanctioned tournaments.

Last note for Gen Con, I can’t say often enough how gratifying it is to get the support of other companies producing Buffy products for our efforts. It’s easy for me to say to go out and buy their products, because I was doing so even before they agreed to support us. So one more time, please check out these companies products. They don’t have to support us. They just happen to appreciate a group of fans trying to keep a game alive.

Next month we preview the final two tournaments, The Grand Patrol and Showtime. Then it’s on to preregistration. We’ll be combining June and July into one newsletter and we’ll cover which prizes we plan to use for which tournaments. The August newsletter will be published shortly after Gen Con and contain all of the results of what I know will be an awesome event.

The next Newsletter (Volume 2, Issue 5) wil be released in May, 2005.
